Better Data for Better Fisheries Management.

Current recreational effort mail-in surveys can overestimate fishing effort and could lead to overly restrictive regulations.

Your participation in this study helps scientists test a modernized approach to more accurately collect data on offshore reef fish fishing effort using GPS location data.

About the Study

The Reef Fish Angler Effort Study is a cooperative research project led by LGL fisheries scientists. We are recruiting ~150 private recreational reef fish anglers across the Gulf of America to help improve how recreational reef fish fishing effort is recorded.

Anglers will install a GPS device on their private vessel. By examining vessel movement patterns researchers can better estimate the number of recreational fishing vessels actively targeting reef fish, without some of the biases  of mail-in surveys.
